Oświęcim, a processing plant for the camp

Cabbage and vegetables were pickled here for the camp. On paper light labour, in reality a sentence.
The plant stood in the same area as the food warehouses and was an extension of them. Vegetables from the camp's farms came here, into huge concrete vats, where they were pickled for the winter. Women prisoners worked them, many hours a day.
Work at the vats meant standing in water, in cold and damp, in camp clothing and wooden clogs. In the classification of work detachments it counted as light, because it was under a roof and required no lifting. In practice it destroyed a person in a few weeks, and women who could no longer keep up were sent back to the camp.
The buildings and parts of the structures survive. This is one of those places where you can see how far beyond the gate the camp reached, and how ordinary the buildings looked in which people died of exhaustion.
