What happened here

The detachment numbered eleven people and worked at the Gestapo headquarters in Katowice throughout 1944. For the first three weeks the prisoners slept in one of the rooms on the spot.

The subcamp was linked to three addresses in the city, established during field research in 2006 and 2007.

What is left

The building of the former Gestapo headquarters on ul. Powstancow still stands today and is in use.

By the main entrance is a plaque that begins with the words: “Look — these walls are steeped in crime.”
