45Subcamps of KL Auschwitz

We count as a subcamp a detachment in which the prisoners lived at the place of work and which was under a single Lagerführer. That is why we count Budy as one camp, although it was made up of three parts, and Gliwice as four, because each had its own commander.

The “Work” column gives the branch of industry as classified in the Re-Finding the Sub Camps of Auschwitz research (subcamps-auschwitz.org). The actual work was often narrower or different: at Bobrek, listed as an ironworks, prisoners produced electrical equipment for Siemens. Each subcamp card describes it under “Type of work”.

Can these places be visited?
Mostly no. Of the forty five subcamps what is left is foundations in a field, fragments of wall, or nothing. Only a few are secured and open, and those are the ones we show in our educational programmes. The rest now exist only in a register like this one.
