The subcamp at Slawiecice was created in April 1944 at the construction of a coal hydrogenation plant. On 17 January 1945 three thousand nine hundred and fifty nine men and a hundred and fifty seven women were held here.
Blechhammer had earlier functioned as a forced labour camp and in April 1944 was taken over by Auschwitz. Its scale and its own crematorium made it a camp within a camp.
On the road between Slawiecice and the local railway station stands a large board recording that a camp for men and women, a branch of Auschwitz, existed here.
A plaque on the front wall of the crematorium building bears the inscription: “A place consecrated by the blood of the victims who died for freedom”.
